A bit about the story...It's January 1945 in Auschwitz and liberation is in progress. The Nazis have fled, and the Soviet soldiers are moving into the camp, freeing and aiding prisoners left behind. Among them is Celina, who has already survived the unthinkable through her journey leading to Auschwitz. She believes she has lost everything, including her husband, Noah. Then, in a crowd of German prisoners (former soldiers) being marched away under Soviet guard, Celina sees a face she's spent the last year telling herself she could never see again. She knows it can't be him. She watched him die. But she has nothing left to lose and no direction to go—so she follows him.The Lost Husband moves between the frigid January temperatures and the beautiful home of Amsterdam where Celina and Noah built a life together before the war tore them apart. It's a story about survival, about the stories we tell ourselves to keep us going, and about how far we'll go to reach a thread of hope. Why I wrote this...I've always been drawn to stories that live in a place beyond survival. Not the horror of skimming by and making it out alive, but the parts after that. I've thought about what someone might do with a life they weren't sure they'd get to keep living. The Lost Husband started as a question about hope and grief—whether the mind is capable of creating a different version of someone's story as a part of grief, or as hope for a rare possibility against odds. I still don't fully know the answer myself, but I know Celina had to find out.
