My Husband's Past

Shari J. Ryan • Sep 23, 2024

My best friend disappeared twenty years ago.

I thought she was dead.

But today I’ve received a message that makes my heart stop. It says it’s from Izzy. And she’s blaming my new husband for her disappearance…

I stare at the email in horror. I’ve only just managed to put what happened to Izzy behind me. My life is so different now. I have two perfect children, and the perfect husband at last.

“I couldn’t just say nothing. You remember I was being stalked? My stalker is your husband. You're in danger. Run.”

My blood turns to ice as I look up at my charming, caring husband. Is this some kind of joke? Griffin is kind, he's safe.

But as he smiles at me, the doubt starts to creep in. The way he always asks me about my childhood, pressing for information about my friends. The way he always wants to know where I am…

I thought my best friend was dead. I thought her stalker killed her.

If the email isn’t really from Izzy, then who sent it—and what do they want from my family? But if it is, am I living with the man I’ve feared for twenty years? And if he can’t hurt Izzy, will he settle for me instead—or worse, my children…?

It's Release Day and I couldn't be more excited to share this book with you!

A quick, funny story for release day…

I haven’t been writing thrillers for very long, but as soon as I began plotting my first one, The Homemaker, my husband started a series of jokes with everyone we know, telling them he has to sleep with one eye open because my imagination is a little over the top.

(Side note: If you don’t know me all that well, I wouldn’t hurt a fly in real life.)

His joke evolved over the last two years to him telling people he’s doing okay because he hasn’t ended up in one of my thriller books yet, but if that day ever comes, he knows he’s done something wrong and they should check on him.

I would always follow his comments with a “ha ha” and roll my eyes, then reassure him I would never write him into one of my books.

Unless it’s out of my control…

My publisher shared my new title with me last spring after I handed in my manuscript, and I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard in my life. Then I realized I had to break the news to the poor guy. He had a good laugh about it, then asked what the husband’s fate was in the book. Of course, I told him I can’t tell him. He’ll have to read to find out!

The book has been sitting on his desk for the past week, just staring at him.

He looked at the family shared calendar last night, finding: “MY HUSBAND’S PAST” taking up the entire block and confirmed with me that today is release day.

I said: Yup; it is!!

He said: “Oh, I see. Okay. Well…”

Obviously, I gave him a blank stare back ;).

He still hasn’t read the book yet and I’m not sure he will. Can’t say I blame him!

However, if he reads the book…he might choose to write me into one next...

And that’s that. You’ll have to read My Husband’s Past to find out what happens!

All kidding aside, the book has nothing to do with my husband, who is and has been the love of my life for twenty years. He’s been a great sport about the title and, as always, my biggest supporter.
